Our Story
Bhosarigaon is dotted with small industrial units that meet the demands for machine parts of the Auto industry. Young men and the not-so-young from UP, Bihar, Karnataka, and other states toil as contract labour for a measly Rs12,000 a month.
They live in tenements often 6 people in a room, space and quiet are a luxury. After school children play in the gullies along with dogs, stray cattle, and pigs . The narrow streets are often filled with refuse and garbage. Trees are scarce and so are public spaces like parks and playgrounds.
It is not unusual to find drunk men lying in a stupor on the road on paydays. Fights and beatings are common. Children are left to their own devices as parents work 8-hour shifts. The older children, mostly girls mind the young. Days when water flows in communal taps are very busy days.
Astytva started as an after-school space for children studying in the municipal school in the neighborhood. A space where they were welcomed. A large airy space with many windows, it was a part of an abandoned school. Books to read, laptops available for exploration, a terrace to escape to_ for socializing and a rough game of football, Hobby clubs, tents for alone time, didis and bhaiyas to help you with homework. It was difficult to send children home in the evening. It became their home away from home, a place where they could find themselves while being themselves. A place called Astytva
